It used to be that you could rely on the marketing departments in the record labels to do all those things for you. You would only have to focus on what you thought was most important: the music itself.
You've worked hard on your songs. You might even have spent considerable money getting them recorded in a real studio. Needless to say, you have something to show the world and you want people to pay attention!
But where should you start your marketing? If you think you should just yell from the top of your Facebook page then guess what? Nobody's gonna hear you. Facebook won't let you engage with your entire fanbase unless you pay them and you're already paying off the credit card balance from the recording session.
Even if you've released your CD on Spotify and iTunes you have no way of talking to your fans directly. You want to hear what they have to say and bask in all the glorious feedback your die-hard fans will give you right?
What that means is that you need to turn off your music juices for a minute and put on your marketing hat.
But hey, don't worry. You won't turn into a lame sell-out. What I'm talking about is knowing how you can become a Rockstar Musicpreneur that markets your music like a pro without sacrificing ANY of your credibility.
You should be glad. At least you don't have to market something mind numbingly boring like toilet paper. This your music we're talking about! It's exciting!
Having a fundamental knowledge of what marketing is all about will help your music career in the long run. You'll know how to position your music to the right fans and you'll save booking agents time and effort so they know exactly what you're about immediately.
Just so you know how invisible marketing can be, let me tell you a quick story using the 4 P's of marketing:

Let's say you wanted to buy a new guitar but you weren't sure which one to get. Here's where the invisible 4 P's of marketing from the guitar companies come into play.
You need a new guitar so you start looking for one. In order for any guitar company to get your business they need to have a Place to sell you something. That's the first P they've taken care of. Even if Fender sells you their guitar through Amazon they've still thought about where they can offer their guitars to a potential customer (you).
Next up, they need to offer you a Product you actually want. If you're a heavy metal guitar player you might not actually want a Fender but a Schecter or a Jackson guitar instead. If that's the case, Fender might lose your business because Jackson has positioned their products to appeal to the metal guitar players.
The third P, Promotion, plays a big role in influencing your decision as well. Maybe you saw an ad from Gibson on the internet advertising your dream Les Paul guitar? You've been meaning to upgrade your guitar sound for a while so this might be the perfect opportunity right? Boom! Gibson takes the prize and you order a brand new Sunburst Gibson Les Paul, perfectly suited for the Led Zeppelin cover band you're about to start.
Finally, we come to Price. Price is a HUGE influence on behavior because not everybody can afford the same things. Maybe you can't swing that Gibson Les Paul so you settle for the less expensive (but just as cool looking!) Epiphone Les Paul.
Good question! Let me tell you how it all applies to your marketing efforts when you're promoting your band, getting yourself out there and reaching more fans.
Product: Your music is your product. It is what the fans are consuming when they buy your music. To booking agents, the product is your live show or style fit with their venue or other bands.
Promotion: Your music doesn't interest everyone. You need to promote to the right audience. The metalhead won't care about your folk music and the Rock Venue won't book it either.
Price: How you price your music and your services is extremely important. Knowing what to charge for shows, CDs and merchandise is invaluable to making the most money with your music.
If you don't have a good answer to all those questions then read on, we're about to get to the good stuff...
That's where your music marketing efforts need to start. Having a solid place of operations at the center of everything is the #1 thing to do when you're starting to market your music.
Having a place is the first step towards laying the foundation for all of your other marketing efforts.
You want complete control of what your musical message is about. You don't want to give it up just because your favorite social network changed its programming.
But you also don't need to keep it complicated. To build your own website for instance, you only need to know 20% about building one to get 80% of the results from using them.
In fact, it's not the technology behind websites that make them effective. It's the marketing that you use on the pages that really matter. It's the way you market yourself on your website that convinces them to become your fan or customer.
You website could be butt ugly while still being effective. Luckily, we'll try to make your marketing both powerful and pretty.
